The June 12 Election

June 12, 1993, remains one of the most significant dates in Nigerian political history. On this day, Nigerians went to the polls in what was widely regarded as the freest and fairest election the country had ever seen.

Chief M.K.O. Abiola, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist, was the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was leading the polls against Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). Abiola’s “Hope ’93” campaign had transcended ethnic and religious lines.

However, before the final results could be officially announced, the military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, annulled the election, citing irregularities. The annulment sparked nationwide protests and a deep political crisis that lasted for years. June 12 has since become a symbol of the struggle for democracy in Nigeria and is now celebrated as Democracy Day.
